HP Plain everything

HP definitely needs to design better-looking devices than the iPaq Data Messenger

Most Windows Mobile devices that I've tested recently are small. Only ones with sliding keyboards can be described as big, relatively. Still, they are definitely smaller than last year's models. More importantly, all of them are sleek and stylish.

HP iPaq Data Messenger: The latest Windows Mobile device from HP.

Apparently, their makers know they can't go wrong making PDA handsets fashionable and desirable. After all, looks can be a great market differentiation when most products share pretty much the same features.

In my fond memory, HP's calculators are the best. If money is no problem, people would gladly trade Texas Instrument/Casio's sleek bodies with HP's tough looking ones. Those were the days when HP built their handheld devices to last, but hardly for their looks.

Today it's a different story. Many PDA manufacturers have proved that toughness and elegance can go hand in hand, a fact HP doesn't seem to realise. Or so I thought when I first saw the company's latest Windows Mobile device, HP iPaq Data Messenger, the subject of today's discussion.

To be blunt, this bulky (and heavy) HP handset has a face only a mother could love. It looks out of place compared to other current WM devices, not to mention Apple's iPhone. This is a pity considering that the product comes from the same company who gave you Vivienne Tam's design netbook.

While it's understandable for the unit to be thick - featuring a full sliding QWERTY keyboard and all - its outdated design leaves a lot to be desired.

The unit's front panel components include a 2.81" transmissive TFT screen (with standard resolutions of 320x240), Send Key, End Key, Windows Key, OK Key, and a 5-way Optical Navigator. Ringer switch, placed on the top, is designed to turn on and off the sounds from incoming calls quickly.

The stylus slot is located at the bottom left, a very uncomfortable corner, in my opinion. The stylus itself is extendable when extracted from and retractable when inserted back into the slot. Cool.

Key Guard button, Volume Key, and Messaging Button are located on the left side. (The Key Guard is quite useful for preventing the protruding Send and End keys to accidentally activate.) On the right side, lie Micro-USB connector (NOT a mini-USB one that we are familiar with), Stereo Head Phone Jack (2.5mm.) and Camera Key.

Obviously, this device is not designed with minimalist in mind. But featuring real buttons may actually be a good thing. Many people, myself included, still prefer real buttons to virtual ones on-screen. The unit's touch sensitive navigator works OK once you get used to it. It doesn't use circular motions like that of an iPod. But it works.

A full QWERTY keyboard is the device's major differentiation. The quality is good and on par with what you would expect from HP. The keys, laid flat on the surface with no spacing in between, are a bit tough to press, unfortunately.

To add insult to injury, the rest of the features offered are plain and uninspiring. Plain screen resolutions (320x240), plain CPU speed, plain WM user interface, plain camera quality, plain everything.

Despite all these cheerless comments, I feel obliged to commend the unit's great sound quality, which is crisp and clear both for ring tones and conversations.

Years ago, iPaq was the first to create market for Windows Mobile devices. I truly hope that HP/iPaq keeps going with their PDA production line. But they definitely need to design better-looking devices than this one, especially if there is nothing else to differentiate.

Hackers target Biothai files

Biothai Foundation has asked police to investigate the hacking of its computer database which it says is aimed at trying to destroy the non-profit organisation over a dispute involving jasmine rice.

Kingkorn Narintarakul, a deputy director of Biothai, said the database contained important information about Thai biological resources that it has developed over five years.

Biothai, which investigates indigenous biodiversity protection, yesterday filed a complaint with police, saying the attack began on July 5 and persisted until July 8, significantly damaging its online database.

The latest attack was the third and worst since hackers intruded into the core of the computer server of (www.biothai.net), the site's webmaster Kwanchai Muanying said.

"We believe the three attacks have been committed by the same group of people and are aimed at destroying our organisation," he said.

Ms Kingkorn said the latest attack came after Biothai launched a public campaign over the National Science and Technology Development Agency's (NSTDA) recent patenting of genes that generate aroma in the world-famous jasmine rice, or Hom Mali.

The foundation believes the patenting could be a double-edged sword because it has shown that Thailand has accepted the patenting of living organisms.

In the past, Thailand had opposed the patenting of living organisms.

If Thai scientists patent rice genes, foreigners, particularly biotechnology and agricultural giants, could apply for patents of other genes and living organisms.

The attacks came after Biothai started to make significant moves to divulge some inconvenient facts about the tinkering with the rice genes last year, she said.

COOL CLIPS

AN MP3 PLAYER THAT WILL ALSO ANSWER YOUR PHONE
A fashion Accessory that looks great whether clipped on a lapel, belt or a handbag, the new Philips Gogear Luxe SA2420BT isn't just a handy MP3 player. it's also a bluetooth headset.

I found it easy to link the Luxe to my Nokia phone and was happy with the reception when I used it as a Bluetooth adapter.

I was listening to music when someone phoned my mobile and the Luxe automatically switched to Bluetooth function when my phone picked up the call.

There's a light sensitive multifunction button on the front of the Luxe, which either starts or pauses the play or answers or hangs up a call, leaving you with little to do.

The caller's ID and number are displayed on the same one-line LCD scr4een that in forms you of the song title,

however, with taht small a screen, you're not going to be able to browse, so use Windows Explorer to rearrange the order of music files stored on the player first.

The headset has a built-in microphone so it can be used to both enjoy music and for phone talk. The player reproduces good-quality sond thanks to Philip's Full Sonnd technology that restores the sonic details of compressed MP3 files.

Samsung WB500 Hey, good looking

Not only does the samsung wb 500 have a wider focal length, it also makes you look younger

Samsung takes the wide-andgle to a new level with the WB500, a fun and easy to use camera with a good quality Schneider Lens, which is 24 to 240 mm in 35 mm film equivalent, meaning it has 10*zoom capacity.

We tested the ultra wide lens and foun it captured good quality and clean photos especially in a well lit environment. In dimmer surroundings we had som problems focusing on the subject.

That said samsung WB 500 does have some very useful and effective shooting modes.

One of these is the Dual Image Stabilisation mode, which meshes the Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) with the sophisticated algorithms of Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS) to deliver sharp photos.

I tested samsung WB 500 the mode while riding a bus and was mor than happy with the sharp images.

All of us in the newsroom love the Another mode Beauty shotmode, as it made us look fresher and younger. Unfortunately, sometimes it went a little crazy and reporters with paler complexions looked a little too white.

These useful modes can be accessed directly on the dial switch. Other scenery modes are less conveniently accessed, requiring you to work through a few menu layers.

Samsung WB500 provides a frame guide mode, where by you use the first shot as a guideline for compostiting the real shot.

Samsung P3
samsung's latest digital media player does everything you need-and more
with its sharp 3 inch screen and excellent sound quality, the Samsung P3 Digital Meaid Player is ideal for anyoune who wants to watch movies and listen to music on the go.

It supports WMV, H.264 and Mpeg video formats and its DNSe3.0 (digital Natureal Sound Engine)

The provided headphones are satisfactory enough but music enthusiasts will probably want to trade them in for a premium or hi-fi set.
Samsung P3 comes with an intuitive and easy to use user interface that allows you easily browse your music folder and tap a file, then play all the songs sequentialy. Our advice would be to create one folder for each album to better access and manage you music files.

the player also comes with and interface application that lets you use your PC to create playlists on the samsung P3. You can use the application to get rid of your audio CDs and automatically transfer the files to samsung P3.

The application, which is called EmoDio, also lets you convert text files into text-to-speech files for samsung P3 to read.

Several choices of voice are available for download at Samsung's EmoDio.com

The P3 also supports small appications, such as alarm, calendar and games. More applications as well as skins of the user inter interface can be downloaded and added to samsung P3 with the EnoDio application.

Bose QuietComfort 3 A "quiet" storm

these babies offer an impressive audio experience and the latest in on-the-ear comfort

Bose QuiedComfort3

so you've just bought yourself a portable digital musicplayer. That's great, but now you need the high-quality headphones to make the most your listennig experience.

Befor making a decision, do check out Bose'sQuiet Comfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones. This pair certainly live up to its name. I tested the headphones for more than an hour without feeling any discomfort-I usually suffer if I wear on-the-ear headphones for too long.

Quiet Comfort 3 offered me a blissfully quiet listening environment into which I could retreat even though my family was watching TV with the volume at full blast. The sound quality was superb too. I could hear even the smallest details of the progressive rock by Roger Water, which I'd missed earlier in the day while listening through other headphones. And Quiet Comfort 3 reproduced some impressive bass sound.

We also tested them with Freddie Mercury's clips on Youtube and found the music so good that we could have been in the studio with the late Queen vocalist. And when we listened to Queen's "Live At Wembley" recording, the cheers of the crowd were co authentic that we felt we'd been transported to London. The headphonesw clearly enhanced the separation of stereo sound.

TAG Heuer Men's Formula One Alarm Function

TAG Heuer Men's Formula One Alarm Function Watch #WAC111A.BA0850
TAG Heuer traces its roots to the small Swiss village of St-Imier where, in 1860, a watchmaker named Edouard Heuer opened his first shop. His vision was to create remarkable timepieces that pushed the envelope of innovation and precision. The company's reputation grew, and Heuer's first patent for a chronograph mechanism in 1882 was followed by a long list of achievements: the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100 of a second, the first dashboard stopwatch for race cars, the first miniature electronic timekeeping device accurate to 1/1000th of a second, and the first automatic movement with a microrotor, to name just a few.
Over the years, Heuer's reputation for gold-standard precision earned the company the privilege of providing official timing services for a number of world-class competitive sporting events, including the Olympic Games, the FIS Ski World Cup, and the FIA Formula 1 World Championships. To this day, TAG Heuer maintains a close association with the world of competitive sports and enjoys a devoted following among sports celebrities and enthusiasts. In 1985, Heuer joined the TAG (Techniques D'Avant-Garde) group, and the TAG Heuer name and logo were created. Now one of the most recognized and sought-after watch brands in the world, TAG Heuer continues its reputation of innovative design and technological excellence, creating prestigious timepieces that are always at the cutting edge of precision, reliability and style.

LEFT 4 DEAD

lOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW IN THE FIRST-PERSON SURVIVEOR HORROR GENRE?
you've found it
in the eerily atmospheric "left 4 dead" your rear end will be twiching involuntarily as you take the role of a member of a team of four, fighting to survive a zombie apocalypse with whatever weapons you can manage to utilise.

Each member of the team is uniquely animated, with the accompaniment of realistic facial features and voice acting. The suspense of being surprised by a horde of flesh eating zombies who want to tear into you waiting at every corner will get your heart rate pumping, as you empty the rounds of your guns to stay alive long enough to be rescued. Each campaign will challenge you, keeping you on your toes like a nervous ballerina and thinking like Albert Einstein in his laboratory.

The added multiplayer feature is also a significant plus, as you and your friends can join forces to stay alive in the zombie-ridden city. Teamwork is essential for survival.

But wait, there's more: you can also play as zombie! Playing in this mode, the aim is to eat a sufficient amount of flesh so that you can evolve into various forms of super zombies, broadening the means of disembowelling pitiful human survivors!

SONY VAIO P-POCKET STYLE PC

Her deigcate frame stands at 19.8 millimetres and she weighs in at 594 grams. Her adorable features are cute enough that some may say she has a pocket style all of her own. If you caress her olivine green skin and run your fingers through her obsidian black hair, she smiles brightly to show crystal white teeh and blushes a garnet red.

while others may have usightly bolts attached to them, her surface is pristine. she was manufactured virtuously, so that nobody can screw her on the top, bottom or in side, although she occasionally opens her screen to accomodate eight inches.

With proper handling she explodes like the brightness of 1600*768 pixels. You can bask in her afterglow as she shimmers on the outside like a rare "mineral ore."

If you play with her "Instant Mode" button, she will lake you to the farthest depths of the world (wide web), and grace you with her musical moans.

If you take advantage of her services, she will organise your various windows multiple times. Make her feel secure by staring deep into her built-in camera, and if she start to go into voverdrive, put on the noise-cancelling headphones she comes with.

hold her tight in a leather carrying case or navigate throuh her solar system with b Bluetooth laser mouse.

What did you think this was? An tacky, pseudo-erotic novel? We could only be talking about the latest Sony Vaio P Pocket Style PC, with enough pizzazz and flair to satisfy you any way you want.

customer review from www.amazon.com
I am writing this review from this machine, using a wireless connection while i am on the go. it's exactly what it was meant to do. it's not for heavy computing of course, but for email, web browsing, etc, it's perfect. SO portable, comes with a little sleeve, the color is less cotton candy than i expected so i was pleasantly surprised. (i chose pink because at the time it seemed to be the one in stock at best price). keyboard slightly smaller than normal one so takes minor adjustment. no problems picking up internet, wireless and my home dsl wired connection. i haven't yet tried any spreadsheets or documents but will do. i loaded a lot of photos, some mp3's and some videos and no problem with anything. the sd card reader is also handy because i can pull the card from my cell phone or camera on the run.
if you are looking for exactly this, internet, email and basic computing on the run without having some tiny thing in the palm of your hand, but not schlepping around a heavy notebook--this is perfect for you!!! it's inexpensive and decent quality. happy with battery life so far too.
OH almost forgot, the webcam is a nice little bonus too. i'm always snapping pics with camera/phone and here's another easy way to take pics and wirelessly upload to share the moment.

Customer Review
from www.amazon.com

I have had this camera for a few weeks now and I really like it. In fact I like it better than my digital SLR for the most part. I purchased this because I am a mom and I like to take pictures of my kids when we are out. It really isn't practical to haul an SLR to the park, Disney, etc. So I did a lot of research and went with this one. I love that you can watch the pictures in HD on your TV. It takes good video for a camera (not really an issue for me because I have a video camera. I am very impressed with the overall picture quality. Also the camera has tons of modes to take pictures in and my favorite feature of the camera is that you can crop the picture right there on the camera. Finally, I love that these cameras come in colors it helps make the camera standout so you don't forget it or get it confused at parties. Anyway I am very impressed so far. I only gave it 4 stars because I haven't had it that long.

CUSTOMER REVIEW
(from www.amazon.com)
I own both the Nuvi 660 and the 760, I'm writing this review for people having trouble deciding between the two as the price difference between the two products at the time of this review is about 100 dollars. I'm not going to focus on the feature differences, as that information can be easily obtained from specifications and online reviews. The 660 was a fine product back in 2005-2006, but the new 760 outdoes the 660 in practically everything, but there are some key usability fixes that make the 760 a better buy for the frequent user.

1. 760 has much better fonts for street names than the 660. This may seem like a trivial update to some, but the 760's fonts greatly improve visibility. The 660 uses all capitalized text for street names on the map, and the font is incredibly cartoonish and unaligned, something like the scribbling Comic Sans font on the PC. The 760 uses your standard Verdana-like font with street names in capitalized and lowercase letters. The fonts on the 760 are smaller, cleaner and surprisingly much easier to read while driving. The maps end up looking professional, and not some cartoony children's video game.

2. 760 has better rendering in 3D map mode than the 660. In the 660 when you are zoomed in under 3D map mode, the roads close to your car are displayed incredibly large, so large that they run into other roads, making the zoom function essentially kind of useless for dense roads. The 760 does not oversize your roads just because you zoomed in to view smaller roads in detail. This fix is very nice for those who drive in places with dense roadways, like New York City.

3. No antenna on the 760 makes hooking up your Nuvi to the cradle one step easier. On the 660 you need to flip up the antenna before attaching the cradle. For people who park their cars on the street overnight, removing the GPS from the cradle for storage in the console or glove compartment is a must, and it's a lot easier hooking up the 760 to the cradle than the 660. It's hard to aim the 660 to its cradle in the dark as you have to align both the bottom edge and the charge port under the antenna. In the 760, the charge port is directly on the bottom of the unit; you can attach it to the cradle with one hand in the dark easily on the 760.

4. It takes the 660 a good 45 seconds on average (sometimes longer than 2 minutes) after boot up to locate the satellite on a cold start. If you have firmware 2.6 installed on the 760, the satellite acquisition time after boot up is between 10-20 seconds. After the firmware update, my 760 also holds a stronger lock to the satellites than my 660, I can get satellite lock inside my house with the 760, whereas I can't get a lock with my 660 (adjusting the antenna does very little).

5. The ability to set multiple ad hoc viapoints on the 760 means it's a lot easier creating alternate routes (very handy to avoid a specific interstate or a high traffic road). Whereas the 660 gives you just one viapoint
